Two powerful excursions, one common goal, to open doors and spark ambition. This month, our students took major steps toward their futures through two inspiring university experiences: stepping into the shoes of a social worker at La Trobe Shepparton and heading off on their final Year 12 university visit to RMIT and La Trobe Bundoora.

Social Worker for a Day: Inspiring Futures at La Trobe Shepparton
On Thursday, a group of our students stepped into the shoes of a social work student during an immersive excursion at La Trobe’s Shepparton campus.

The day was filled with hands on activities exploring key themes like advocacy, human connection, and driving positive change, giving students a real taste of what it means to be a social worker.

They had the chance to chat with current university students and staff in small group discussions, ask questions, and dive into lively debates.

The session also highlighted the difference between TAFE and university pathways, what life at university is really like, and the wide range of career opportunities in the field.

RMIT & La Trobe Bundoora: A Final Year 12 Uni Adventure!
Our last university excursion of the year was one to remember.

35 of our Year 12 students swapped classrooms for campuses, as they set off on their final university excursion to RMIT and La Trobe in Bundoora. With graduation just around the corner and future pathways top of mind, the trip gave students a valuable taste of what’s possible beyond high school.

First stop: RMIT Bundoora!
After a two hour journey filled with excitement and anticipation, students kicked off the day with an interactive scavenger hunt across the RMIT campus. It was a great way to stretch the legs and get a familiar with the grounds. Students also toured the impressive facilities, including modern on-campus accommodation and student hubs that offer a taste of real university life. The students were buzzing with questions and possibilities.

Following an engaging session on RMIT’s course offerings and campus life, students took part in a dynamic rocket building activity that brought learning to life. Rockets were designed and launched one after another, capturing everyone’s attention and enthusiasm. Miss Kerr and Miss Cummins earned bragging rights for the day when their rocket soared the highest, marking a clear highlight in an already memorable visit.

Next up: La Trobe Bundoora!
The next destination brought students to the leafy, relaxed environment of La Trobe’s campus. A casual lunch in the central courtyard, surrounded by greenery and a calm atmosphere, set a welcoming tone for the visit. With its peaceful atmosphere, La Trobe felt like a home away from home, especially for our students from Shepparton looking for a similar community vibe.

During the visit, students toured the accommodation options and eagerly learned about various scholarships available to regional students. They were also inspired by a current student ambassador, who shared his personal journey from Shepparton to university life, providing valuable insights and encouragement.

A Day to Remember
These excursions weren’t just campus tours, they were powerful, real-world glimpses into what life after school can look like. They gave our students space to imagine, ask questions, and consider where they want to go next.

A huge thank you to La Trobe Shepparton, RMIT Bundoora, and La Trobe Bundoora for their generosity and hospitality. We can’t wait to see where these experiences lead our incredible students.

Greater Shepparton Secondary College proudly acknowledges the remarkable achievements of three of our students, Murtaza, Urijah, and Izaiah, who recently represented Goulburn Valley Boxing Academy at the 2025 Boxing Queensland Golden Gloves Tournament.

Murtaza faced the massive challenge of competing in a 7-man division, taking on three intense fights across three consecutive days. His performance stood out as one of Coach Zedda’s most memorable to date.

“I am so happy for him, and he is such a focused respectful student to train. He is very disciplined and trains 5 times a week” Coach Zedda said.

Meanwhile, fresh off an impressive international trip, Urijah and Izaiah returned to the ring at the Queensland event and both taking home gold. Both students with impressive victories, proving they are in top form as the countdown to the 2025 National Titles begins.

Urijah is also scheduled to fight again in Melbourne on August 10, with efforts underway to secure a match for Murtaza on the same card.

This outstanding tournament performance is a credit to Coach Zedda and the GV Boxing team. Their dedication to training, mentorship, and athlete development continues to build a strong reputation for excellence in the sport.

Congratulations to the boxers, Coach Zedda, and the entire GV Boxing community on this well-earned success.
