We proudly celebrated the achievements of our Year 10 students who graduated from our Active Volunteering class after completing a Certificate II in Active Volunteering on Wednesday, 19 November. The ceremony was held at our Nurjti Campus, where the weekly Active Volunteering classes takes place.

Throughout the year, students engaged in a wide range of hands-on activities, including cooking classes, environmental work, creating resumes and regular participation at OLLY. As part of the program, each student was also required to complete a set number of volunteer hours. Our students rose to the challenge, contributing to the community through a range of activities.

The graduation event was a proud moment for these students and their families. It was inspiring to hear students share how much the program has meant to them, from growing in confidence and developing social skills to forming meaningful friendships along the way.

A huge thank you to our dedicated staff Colleen, Cathy, Fye and Sania for coordinating the program and supporting the cohort throughout the year.

Well done to all our Active Volunteering Graduates!
Below are some reflections from our students about their experience in the program:

Larrissa Doherty, Year 10

“I like to come to Active volunteering to catch up with my friends and annoy Cathy. I love cooking with everyone and sharing lunch.”

Maddie Beare, Year 10

“I like Active volunteering because it’s a good break from school in the middle of the week and it gives me a chance to meet new people.”

Thomas Anderson, Year 10

“My favourite subjects are psychology and business. I love to come to active volunteering for two reasons because it’s a day out of school and I get to participate in cooking and making new dishes.”

 Jarrod Martell, Year 10

“I love to spend time with my friends on active volunteering day on Wednesdays. We do lots of fun activities and get to see my mates and cook food. I love the food we make at NURTJA except too many sweet potatoes.”

Belle Chandler, Year 10

“I love to come to active volunteering because we get to make new dishes, and we get to eat them. I also like talking to Claudia, my class fellow about books.”

Ali Al Hilfi, Year 10

“I like drumming, studying English, Maths and cooking. Coming to active volunteering is one of favourite things, I like having lunch sitting around the table with my class fellows and the teachers. I love to participate in different activity with my class.”

Daniel Crncevic, Year 10

“I like to come to active volunteering because we are doing schoolwork but having fun too. I love spending time with my friends and cooking.”

Riley Meddings, Year 10

“I like to come to active volunteering on Wednesdays because it gives me a break from school. I like Olly and play basketball outside with my mates."

Lachlan Francia, Year 10

“My favourite things to do is read fiction (my favourite writer being H. P. Lovecraft), draw monsters, and I especially enjoy writing horror stories (at this point, I have probably written over twenty short stories).”

Adam Gillespie, Year 10

“On Wednesday I like to come to Active volunteering and spend time with my mates. The best part is playing games and cooking with my friends. Coming to NURTJA is my favourite part of the week.”

Claudia Weinrowski, Year 10

“Throughout the year I’ve really enjoyed coming to Active Volunteering. I’ve met new people and pushed myself to step out of my comfort zone, which I wouldn’t normally do.”
