At Greater Shepparton Secondary College, we are committed to fostering a safe, respectful and supportive learning environment for all students. One of the ways we do this is through School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS).

What is SWPBS?

SWPBS is an evidence-based framework used in schools across Victoria and beyond. It brings school communities together to create a positive, predictable and inclusive environment where every student can thrive. When implemented effectively, SWPBS supports:

  • Increased respectful and positive behaviour

  • More time focused on learning and instruction

  • Stronger relationships between students and staff

  • Improved student wellbeing and attendance

  • A more predictable and safer learning environment

The SWPBS Matrix

Our SWPBS matrix outlines the expected behaviours aligned with our values. These are taught explicitly and revisited regularly, helping students understand what positive behaviour looks like in different areas of the school from the classroom to the yard, on excursions and online.

Our Non-Negotiables

Our college-wide expectations are clear and consistent. These are in place to ensure the safety, wellbeing and success of every student and staff member:

We are a mobile device free zone

As per Department of Education policy, mobile phones, smart watches, wireless earphones and portable music players must be stored in lockers from 8:50am–3:10pm. Devices seen during the school day will be collected by staff and taken to the office.

We value attendance

Homegroup begins at 8:50am each morning and is an essential part of the day. Every day counts arriving on time and being present helps students stay connected and succeed.

We are a respectful language location

Verbal abuse and inappropriate language have no place in our school community. We are committed to maintaining a positive, inclusive and safe environment for all.

We respect each other’s differences

GSSC celebrates diversity. Discrimination or vilification of any kind – based on race, gender, identity, religion or any other attribute is never accepted.

We want everyone to be safe

We have a zero-tolerance policy on violence. All members of our community have the right to feel safe at school.

Reinforcing Positive Behaviour

We don’t just teach expectations, we celebrate when students meet them!

  • Students receive Chronicle points for positive behaviour.

  • Points can be redeemed through our AIRR Shop, where students choose rewards that motivate them.

  • These points also contribute to Chronicle Awards, presented at House Assemblies.

Supporting Success: How Parents and Guardians Can Help

Families play a key role in reinforcing the values and behaviours we teach at school. Here’s how you can support your child:

  • Talk regularly about school expectations and the SWPBS values

  • Encourage attendance and punctuality

  • Support school policies around devices, behaviour and uniform

  • Celebrate positive reports from school, especially Chronicle points
