GSSC Takes Out Top Prize at Multicultural Film Fest!
We are proud to share that The Way to Freedom (Part 1: The Journey), a documentary made by more than 350 of our amazing students and staff has taken out the Chairperson’s Refugee Stories Award at the 2025 Multicultural Film Festival.
The film was selected from over 1,200 entries across the state and was officially screened at Melbourne’s ACMI Cinemas as part of Refugee Week.
Written and directed by our Multicultural Liaison Officer, Hussam Saraf (aka Sammy), co-produced with media teacher, Darryl McConnell and stars several of our GSSC students and staff. The documentary shines a light on the real, personal stories of refugee families making their way to safety and finding new beginnings here in Shepparton.
“This film is more than just a project, it’s a movement,” said Sammy. “It’s a message of resilience, hope, and the healing power of community and education.”
A small team of GSSC staff headed to Melbourne for the screening and were there to proudly accept the award on behalf of the entire crew. We also received an ‘Official Selection Certificate’ more proof of the heart and hard work that went into this incredible film.
To every student who bravely shared their story, and to every staff member who helped bring it to life, well done.
